Background and experience

1

Agency and studio foundation

Started in agencies, moving from production into creative roles. Founded a design studio in 1999, growing it to serve roughly 100 companies across design and early web work.

2

Kayak Websites and current work

Founded Kayak in 2011, working with 700+ companies on websites, marketing, and digital strategy. The focus shifted to structure, systems, and helping teams manage and scale their websites.

The turning point that shaped his approach

In 2009, Randy stepped away from the business after a stage IV cancer diagnosis. When he returned, the clients who remained were the ones his team had trained and empowered.

That changed how he worked.

The focus shifted from doing the work for clients to working alongside them, building systems they could use, and transferring knowledge so they could continue without dependency.

How he works today

1

Decisions are clear and aligned

Leads strategy, structure, and decision-making across projects working directly with clients. Also guides content, product, and business direction at Kayak Websites and wpSites.

2

Teams know how to move forward

Works directly with marketing teams on how websites are built and used, providing guidance they can carry forward. Leads technical direction with a developer and a network of specialists.

Clients proceed with clarity and control

Randy's clients consistently point to the same outcomes: clarity, confidence, and the ability to manage their website without relying on outside help. The work is structured so knowledge transfers, systems hold up, and teams can move forward on their own if desired.

What he writes about and works on

1

Creative, marketing, and writing

Published extensively on strategy, messaging, SEO, social media, and how businesses communicate with clarity across channels. His writing focuses on making complex ideas practical, helping teams improve how they present, structure, and deliver their message.

2

Websites and digital systems

Focused on how teams build, manage, and improve websites without inconsistency, rework, or reliance on vendors. The work emphasizes structure, usability, and long-term performance so teams can maintain control as their website evolves.

How his approach is applied beyond client work

1

wpSites.ca

Developed as a managed WordPress platform for smaller businesses, reflecting Randy's approach to reducing complexity and giving users a stable, controlled environment they can rely on.

2

SEOaudits.co

A service developed by Randy as a focused audit approach to evaluate website structure, SEO, and discoverability, turning his method into a repeatable way to identify issues and improve performance.

How photography shapes his approach to visual work

1

Landscape and night sky

Randy explores the Canadian wilds with a camera, often at night. Capturing great images depends on planning, timing, and reading the conditions. Locations are scouted, conditions are tracked, and timing is precise, but nature often shifts, requiring adjustments in the moment.

2

Visual and technical discipline

Works with marketing teams to build and manage their websites. Success is measured by clear messaging, consistent page structure, and the ability to publish without rework. Direction is defined and execution is deliberate. When needs shift, he responds without losing clarity or control.

Mentorship is a natural extension

An active mentor on adplist.org, Randy guides junior and senior mentees on many topics, from career advice, to problem solving.

Mr. Randy is really experienced and he answer a lot of doubts just in the first half of the session. The best part is he is very honest and insightful. We need to have some constructive criticism for our professional growth and he was really polite and professional while delivering his thoughts.

Randy is probably one of the best mentors that I've had the really great pleasure of being mentored by. He is very, very knowledgeable of his field and what he's talking about, and I ALWAYS find our sessions very, very helpful. He's also one of the very few mentors that I keep coming back to because of how much I learn from our time together.

I talked with Randy about our new product to receive his feedback. He helped us better plan for our marketing especially regarding community based marketing and how this process can help us go viral. I enjoyed the conversation with him and look forward to my next calls with him.

Randy is super professional and explains in such a simple and clear way, I must point out that my English is not that good and I understood every word he said. Thank you very much for all! looking forward to meet you agian!

"Evans, your work is really good". It's a few words, but it meant so much to a designer losing faith in his creative ability. Randy so calmly, (with a great story too, I must add), walked me through understanding how I could create a "Presentation Approach" - a term I had never heard of - to my work, and land better opportunities. This is my first attempt at finding a design mentor, and starting out with Randy is such a priviledge, and a huge boost. Thanks Randy!

It was a great mentorship session with Randy. I was able to learn a lot about personal branding that I didn't know before. He was open and willing to share his experiences. And he has the ability to break down complex concepts for easy understanding which is very rare. Very inspiring.

Randy is a real Marketer (storyteller) and a great human being. The examples and situations he uses to make you understand the process of anything is to the point. I had a great session! So much to learn from him even within half an hour.

This is the first time in many years that I have sought mentorship, and I am glad it started with Randy. I came in with a chaotic state of mind, and Randy helped me find a way to introspect myself in a more structured manner. His way of inspiring you, helping you understand your problem, and leaving you in awe at the end, is something every mentee needs.

- Nidhi Bennur

I came into the session with Randy thinking that our startup that hasn't yet gotten product-market fit doesn't need to do content marketing. Randy convinced me otherwise and showed me a brilliant and simple strategy to generate content from our target users that resonates with them and enables them to self quality or disqualify.

Randy is an amazing mentor. From our first session alone I learned so much, and now have a better sense of direction for my career. Thanks again Randy!

How this connects back to the work

Everything here points back to how Randy approaches websites and marketing.

Clear thinking. Defined structure. Work that holds up over time.

The goal is not to create something that looks good at launch, but something teams can use, manage, and improve without losing consistency or control.

That’s what carries through every project.
